Absolute change
Shows the difference between new and original values.
Enter the original value and the new value to calculate the numeric increase, percentage change, and multiplier.
Difference = new value - original value. Percentage increase = difference / original value x 100. Multiplier = new value / original value.
Shows the difference between new and original values.
Uses the original value as the comparison base.
Converts the comparison to a spreadsheet-friendly multiplier.
Percentage increase compares a changed value with its starting value. Subtract the original value from the new value first. Then divide that difference by the original value, not the new value, and multiply by 100. Moving from 80 to 100 is an increase of 20; 20 divided by 80 is 25%.
The multiplier gives another way to state the same change. A 1.25x multiplier means the new value is 125% of the original value. This can be practical in forecasts, spreadsheet formulas, price updates, or performance reports where a decimal multiplier is easier to use than a percentage.
When the original value is zero, there is no meaningful percentage-increase base. Report the absolute difference instead and explain the zero baseline. For financial, contractual, regulatory, or scientific reporting, confirm whether negative values and any exclusions should be treated under a separate rule.
| Input | What it means | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Original value | Starting or baseline amount | This is the denominator for percentage change. |
| New value | Updated or ending amount | Use a value measured in the same unit. |
| Difference | New minus original | A negative result indicates a decrease. |
| Multiplier | New divided by original | A 1.00x multiplier means no change. |
Calculate a supplier, subscription, or retail price increase.
Compare revenue, orders, users, or production against a prior period.
Translate a wage or salary change into a percentage.
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100.
The question asks how much the value changed relative to where it started.
Yes. A negative percentage change means the new value is lower than the original.
Percent change is not defined from a zero base; use the absolute difference and explain the baseline.
