Dynamic viscosity conversion method

Converted value = input value × source-unit factor in Pa·s ÷ target-unit factor in Pa·s. Key identity: 1 Pa·s = 1,000 cP = 10 P.

How to convert dynamic viscosity units

Dynamic viscosity describes a fluid resistance to shear or flow under an applied force. The SI unit is the pascal-second (Pa·s). Laboratory data and product specifications also commonly use millipascal-seconds (mPa·s), centipoise (cP), and poise (P). Because 1 mPa·s equals 1 cP, those two numerical values are identical.

Select the unit attached to the source measurement, then choose the required output unit. The calculator converts the input to Pa·s internally before converting to the destination. Always preserve enough significant figures for the measurement precision rather than assuming every displayed decimal is physically meaningful.

Viscosity can change substantially with temperature and, for some fluids, pressure and shear rate. A unit conversion does not normalize those conditions. Compare values only when the test temperature, method, fluid state, and relevant shear conditions are compatible.

Frequently asked questions

What is dynamic viscosity?

It measures a fluid resistance to shear and is commonly expressed in Pa·s, mPa·s, cP, or P.

Is 1 cP equal to 1 mPa·s?

Yes. The two units have exactly the same numerical value.

How many cP are in 1 Pa·s?

One pascal-second equals 1,000 centipoise.

Can I convert dynamic viscosity to kinematic viscosity directly?

Density is required: kinematic viscosity equals dynamic viscosity divided by density, using consistent units.
