Ping measures round-trip time: a packet travels from the sender to a destination and a response returns. Physical distance creates an unavoidable propagation delay. In optical fiber, signals travel substantially slower than light in a vacuum, and the installed cable route is usually longer than the straight-line geographic distance. The route factor models that extra path length.
Propagation is only one part of latency. Routers, switches, access networks, Wi-Fi contention, mobile radio scheduling, firewalls, VPN processing, server response, and queueing add delay. The fixed overhead field lets you create planning scenarios, but actual overhead changes over time and should be measured with repeated tests.
This calculator does not send packets and is not a live ping test. Use it to understand physical limits, compare hosting regions, or build a latency budget. For troubleshooting, measure the real destination from the relevant device and review median latency, variability, packet loss, and route information together.
