Fence Calculator

Estimate the main materials for a straight fence run, including posts, sections, rails, and pickets. This page is built for early budgeting, comparing layout options, and preparing a practical shopping list before you confirm local code, property lines, and final drawings.

This estimate assumes one continuous run. Add extra material for corners, end posts, terrain changes, damaged boards, and layout changes around gates.

How this calculator works

The calculator divides total fence length by the selected post spacing to estimate the number of sections. Posts are counted as section count plus one end post, with two additional support posts for each gate. Rails are estimated by multiplying sections by rails per section, and pickets are estimated from linear feet times pickets per foot.

Example: a 120 ft fence with 8 ft spacing creates 15 sections. With 2 rails per section, the rail estimate is 30 rails. If the layout uses about 2 pickets per foot, the picket estimate is 240 pickets before waste.

Ordering advice

Round every material line up to whole units, then add a practical waste allowance. Posts often need concrete, gravel, caps, and hardware, while gates usually require hinges, latches, diagonal bracing, and stronger posts than the standard line run.

Frequently asked questions

How many fence posts do I need?

For a straight run, divide the fence length by post spacing, round up for sections, then add one end post. Add extra posts for gates, corners, and separate fence runs.

Should I use 6 ft or 8 ft post spacing?

Eight-foot spacing is common, but six-foot spacing can be better for heavier fencing, high wind exposure, uneven ground, or designs that need less rail deflection.

Does this include concrete?

This page focuses on fence framing materials. Concrete depends on hole diameter, hole depth, soil, frost depth, and post size, so estimate it separately after the layout is fixed.
