Mbps to MB/s Converter

Enter an internet or network speed in megabits per second to calculate the theoretical transfer rate in megabytes per second and related byte-based units.

Convert Mbps to megabytes per second

Mbps to MB/s formula

Megabytes per second (MB/s) = megabits per second (Mbps) ÷ 8, because one byte contains eight bits.

Exact bit-to-byte ratio

Uses eight bits per byte for the primary conversion.

Supporting units

Also shows decimal kB/s and an approximate binary GiB/s rate.

Practical context

Explains why real throughput is lower than theoretical capacity.

How to convert Mbps to MB/s correctly

Internet plans and network links are usually advertised in megabits per second, written Mbps with a lowercase b. File downloads and storage applications often report megabytes per second, written MB/s with an uppercase B. Since one byte contains eight bits, divide Mbps by eight to obtain the theoretical MB/s rate. For example, 800 Mbps equals 100 MB/s before overhead.

The result is a unit conversion, not a guaranteed speed test. Actual transfer rates can be lower because network protocols add headers and acknowledgements, Wi-Fi conditions fluctuate, servers enforce limits, routes become congested, and storage devices need time to read or write data. Multiple devices and background traffic also share available capacity.

Network prefixes are commonly decimal: one megabit is 1,000,000 bits and one megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. Some operating systems display file sizes with binary units or label them inconsistently, so observed numbers may differ even when the underlying byte count is the same.

Common Mbps to MB/s conversions

InputWhat it meansPlanning note
100 Mbps12.5 MB/s theoreticalA 1 GB decimal file takes at least about 80 seconds before overhead.
500 Mbps62.5 MB/s theoreticalActual Wi-Fi throughput depends strongly on signal and equipment.
1,000 Mbps125 MB/s theoreticalOften marketed as 1 Gbps service.

Common use cases

Internet plans

Translate advertised line speed into a familiar file-transfer rate.

Network planning

Compare link capacity with storage and server throughput.

Download estimates

Use MB/s to estimate ideal file transfer duration.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?

100 Mbps divided by eight equals 12.5 MB/s theoretically.

Why do I divide Mbps by 8?

One byte contains eight bits, so a byte-per-second rate is one eighth of the equivalent bit-per-second rate.

Why is my download slower than the result?

The conversion shows theoretical capacity. Protocol overhead, congestion, Wi-Fi, server limits, and device performance reduce actual throughput.

Is Mbps the same as MB/s?

No. Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second. The uppercase B represents bytes.
