Byte-to-bit conversion
Multiplies the primary MB/s value by eight.
Enter a file transfer rate in megabytes per second to calculate the equivalent network speed in megabits and gigabits per second.
Megabits per second (Mbps) = megabytes per second (MB/s) × 8, because every byte contains eight bits.
Multiplies the primary MB/s value by eight.
Shows the equivalent decimal gigabits per second.
Includes an approximate MiB/s value to explain display differences.
Multiply megabytes per second by eight to convert a byte-based transfer rate into megabits per second. A measured download of 50 MB/s corresponds to 400 Mbps of payload throughput. The distinction is easy to miss because the abbreviations differ only by letter case: MB/s uses uppercase B for bytes, while Mbps uses lowercase b for bits.
When comparing a download application with an internet plan, remember that the observed file rate represents useful payload after some overhead. A connection may need more than the calculated Mbps capacity to sustain that MB/s result under real conditions. Wi-Fi interference, router processing, VPN encryption, server location, and storage performance can all affect the measurement.
This page uses decimal MB/s for the primary calculation. Binary mebibytes per second, MiB/s, use 1,048,576 bytes per unit rather than 1,000,000. Check which convention your operating system, browser, game launcher, or transfer application displays before comparing values.
| Input | What it means | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| 10 MB/s | 80 Mbps | A connection needs additional capacity to account for overhead. |
| 50 MB/s | 400 Mbps | Common on faster broadband under favorable conditions. |
| 100 MB/s | 800 Mbps | Near the payload range of a strong gigabit connection. |
| 125 MB/s | 1,000 Mbps | The theoretical byte rate for one decimal gigabit per second. |
Compare an application transfer rate with an ISP speed result.
Match network adapters, switches, servers, and drives.
Identify whether a reported value is in bits or bytes.
100 MB/s multiplied by eight equals 800 Mbps.
No. MBps or MB/s indicates megabytes per second, while Mbps indicates megabits per second.
125 MB/s is a theoretical conversion. Protocol overhead, equipment, Wi-Fi, servers, and storage reduce real payload throughput.
A decimal MB contains 1,000,000 bytes; a binary MiB contains 1,048,576 bytes.
