Markup and margin are related, but they are not the same. Markup is calculated from cost. Margin is calculated from selling price. A 50% markup on a $10 cost creates a $15 selling price, but the gross margin is 33.3%, not 50%.
Use markup when building a price from cost. Use margin when comparing profitability across products, discounts, channels, or sales reports. This calculator shows both so pricing decisions are less confusing.
