Flexible units
Supports MB, GB, TB, Mbps, Gbps, and MB/s.
Enter a file size and connection speed, select the units, and adjust expected efficiency to estimate how long the download may take under real-world conditions.
Download time in seconds = file size in bytes × 8 ÷ effective bits per second; effective speed = entered speed × efficiency percentage.
Supports MB, GB, TB, Mbps, Gbps, and MB/s.
Models less-than-perfect sustained throughput.
Formats results into days, hours, minutes, and seconds.
Download time depends on the total number of bits in the file and the effective transfer speed. Convert the file size to bytes, multiply by eight, and divide by bits per second. This calculator performs those conversions automatically for MB, GB, and TB files and for Mbps, Gbps, or MB/s speeds.
The efficiency setting helps bridge the gap between advertised link capacity and sustained payload throughput. A value such as 85 percent can be a useful planning assumption, but there is no universal percentage. Wired networks can be stable, while Wi-Fi changes with distance, interference, channel use, walls, and device capability. Remote servers, VPNs, congestion, and slow disks can create additional bottlenecks.
The estimate assumes a steady average speed and decimal file units. Downloads that contain many small files, require decompression, pause for verification, or use rate-limited services may take longer. For critical migrations or backups, measure a representative transfer and include operational buffer time.
| Input | What it means | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Total amount of data to transfer | This tool treats MB, GB, and TB as decimal units. |
| Connection speed | Advertised or measured transfer capacity | A measured sustained speed usually gives a better estimate. |
| Speed unit | Mbps, Gbps, or MB/s | Check uppercase B versus lowercase b carefully. |
| Efficiency | Percentage of entered speed expected as payload | Adjust from real measurements when available. |

At a perfect 100 Mbps, one decimal GB takes about 80 seconds. At 85 percent efficiency, it takes about 94 seconds.
Advertised line speed is not always sustained payload speed because of protocol overhead and real network conditions.
The file-size options use decimal MB, GB, and TB. A GiB is larger and would take slightly longer at the same speed.
Yes. Enter the measured upload speed to estimate an upload, although the page labels the result as download time.
