Formula

Project area = length x width. Tile area = tile length x tile width converted to square feet. Tiles needed = project area x waste factor / tile area.

Example

A 12 ft by 10 ft floor is 120 sq ft. With 12 x 12 inch tiles and 10% waste, you need about 132 tiles.

Useful for

Floor tile, wall tile, shower tile, kitchen backsplash, bathroom renovation, and material ordering.

Tile estimating notes

Tile layouts, cuts, breakage, pattern direction, grout width, and future repairs affect quantity. Buy extra tiles from the same lot when color consistency matters.

FAQ

How much tile waste should I add?

Straight layouts often use 10% waste. Diagonal, herringbone, complex cuts, or small rooms may need 15% or more.

Should grout spacing be included?

This calculator ignores grout spacing for a simple estimate. For large tiles or precise layouts, include spacing in your tile module size.
