Deadline based
Works backward from data volume and target completion time.
Enter a data volume and target completion time to calculate the required Mbps, MB/s, and Gbps, including an adjustable allowance for protocol and system efficiency.
Required bits per second = data bytes × 8 ÷ target seconds ÷ expected efficiency.
Works backward from data volume and target completion time.
Shows required Mbps, MB/s and Gbps together.
Inflates provisioned bandwidth when payload uses only part of link capacity.
Bandwidth planning starts with the amount of data that must move and the time available. Convert the data volume to bits, divide by the target duration in seconds, and adjust for expected useful throughput. The result is the minimum average provisioned rate for one transfer under the entered assumptions.
Production links usually carry more than one workload. Backups, replication, user traffic, monitoring, software updates, voice and video can overlap. Add capacity for concurrency, bursts, retransmissions, growth and service-level objectives rather than sizing a link exactly to one average calculation.
Efficiency varies by protocol, latency, packet loss, encryption, hardware and file pattern. Large sequential transfers may approach link capacity, while many small files can spend more time on metadata and acknowledgements. Measure a representative workload whenever the transfer deadline is operationally important.
| Input | What it means | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Data volume | Total decimal MB, GB or TB to move | Include all files and expected transfer overhead where relevant. |
| Target time | Maximum acceptable completion duration | Use the actual transfer window, not the whole maintenance window. |
| Efficiency | Expected useful throughput percentage | Lower values require more provisioned capacity. |
| Required Mbps | Average link rate under the assumptions | Add concurrency and growth margin before procurement. |
Size bandwidth to finish backups before business hours.
Estimate sustained network capacity for bulk datasets.
Plan daily delivery capacity for video and production assets.
Using decimal units at 100 percent efficiency requires about 2,222.22 Mbps. Lower efficiency requires more provisioned bandwidth.
Only part of the nominal link rate may carry useful file payload, so the provisioned rate must be higher.
Yes. Consider concurrent traffic, growth, bursts, retransmissions and operational deadlines.
Bandwidth is link capacity; throughput is the rate actually achieved by the workload.
