A percentage expresses a part of a whole in units of 100. Enter the amount you are measuring as the part and the complete amount as the total. For example, 35 out of 140 is 25%, because 35 divided by 140 equals 0.25 and 0.25 multiplied by 100 equals 25.
Use consistent units. If the part is in dollars, the total must be in dollars; if the part is in hours, the total must be in hours. The remaining output is useful for a budget balance, unfinished project work, unfilled capacity, or responses not in the selected survey group.
A percentage alone does not explain the size of the total. Ten percent of 10 and ten percent of 10,000 are both 10%, but the underlying amounts differ. For reporting, retain both the percentage and the source values, then apply the rounding convention required by your school, workplace, contract, or financial record.
