Reduction amount
Shows how much was removed from the starting value.
Enter the original value and the new value to calculate the amount removed, percentage decrease, and amount remaining as a percentage of the original.
Decrease amount = original value - new value. Percentage decrease = decrease amount / original value x 100. Remaining percentage = new value / original value x 100.
Shows how much was removed from the starting value.
Measures the reduction against the original value.
Shows the new value as a share of the starting value.
To calculate a decrease, subtract the new value from the original value. Divide that decrease by the original value and multiply by 100. A change from 100 to 75 removes 25 units; 25 divided by 100 equals a 25% decrease.
The remaining percentage is the complement of the decrease when both values are positive. In the example above, 75% remains after a 25% decrease. Showing both values can prevent ambiguity in reports, particularly when a reader needs to know the remaining level rather than only the amount removed.
Percent decrease is not interchangeable with percent increase. A 50% decrease requires a 100% increase to return to the original level. Keep the original baseline, dates, units, and any rounding method visible when comparing prices, budgets, quantities, or measured performance.
| Input | What it means | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Original value | The starting amount before a reduction | Use it as the baseline for the calculation. |
| New value | The amount after the change | Use the same unit as the original value. |
| Decrease amount | Original minus new | A negative result indicates an increase instead. |
| Remaining percentage | New value as a share of original | It complements the decrease for positive inputs. |
Measure a price reduction from list price to sale price.
Show how much a planned expense or allocation was reduced.
Compare lower energy, material, or inventory use with a baseline.
Subtract the new value from the original, divide by the original value, and multiply by 100.
Decrease is the share removed; remaining percentage is the share still left.
For positive original values and non-negative new values, no. Negative new values can produce results above 100%.
No. A 50% reduction leaves half the original amount, so doubling is required to return to the starting value.
