Converters
Convert milliliters of a substance to grams by entering its density in grams per milliliter.
The default density is a water approximation only. Calculations run locally in your browser.
Milliliters measure volume and grams measure mass. The conversion is mass in grams = volume in milliliters × density in g/mL. At an assumed density of 1 g/mL, 250 mL gives 250 g. If the actual density were 0.8 g/mL, the same volume would instead be 200 g. A bare “mL to grams” answer without a substance or density is not generally meaningful.
NIST’s water material reference lists density near 1 g/cm³ for a particular reference condition. Since 1 cm³ equals 1 mL, that is approximately 1 g/mL. Real water density changes with temperature and dissolved material. Oils, syrups, alcohol solutions and powders differ much more, so do not leave the water default in place for another substance.
For cooking, a product label or recipe weight is often a better source than a generic density. For laboratory, medical, legal or commercial use, get a density measured at the relevant conditions and account for significant figures. This tool does not estimate a density from the name of a material; it deliberately asks you to supply it. The displayed result is arithmetic, not a guarantee of measurement accuracy.
Example: 250 mL × 1 g/mL = 250 g for approximate water. At 0.8 g/mL, 250 mL × 0.8 = 200 g.
Use the sample inputs above to reproduce this result. Enter your own values to see how the calculation changes; rounding appears only in the displayed answer unless otherwise stated in the method.
No. Only a substance near 1 g/mL would give about 100 g.
Use a trusted label, data sheet or mass divided by a measured volume at the relevant conditions.
No. Flour bulk density varies with packing and is not 1 g/mL.
One is volume and the other is mass; density links them.
