Converters
Convert an ingredient’s mass in grams to US cups with an ingredient-specific chart weight, not a universal grams-per-cup rule.

Grams measure mass while cups measure volume. Conversion therefore needs the mass of a cup of the particular substance. This page uses the King Arthur Baking ingredient chart for all-purpose flour at 120 g per US cup, white granulated sugar at 198 g, packed brown sugar at 213 g, butter at 226 g, cocoa powder at 85 g, and old-fashioned or quick-cooking oats at 89 g. Water uses the US cup volume of about 236.588 mL and an approximate density of 1 g/mL.
The formula is cups = grams ÷ reference grams per cup. For 240 g of all-purpose flour, 240 ÷ 120 = 2 US cups. For 240 g of sugar, the answer is about 1.212 cups instead. The numerical difference demonstrates why a mass-to-volume tool without an ingredient selector can be misleading. A metric cup, an imperial cup and a US customary cup are different volumes.
Even within one ingredient, scooping, sifting, packing, moisture and granule size change how much mass fits in a cup. King Arthur recommends a digital scale for best baking results and notes that recipe-specific weights can differ from its general chart. If the recipe provides grams, retain grams where possible. Treat this conversion as a kitchen approximation, not a laboratory density measurement.
Example: 240 g all-purpose flour ÷ 120 g per US cup = 2 cups. Change the ingredient to sugar and the result changes because 1 cup of sugar is heavier.
Use the sample inputs above to reproduce this result. Enter your own values to see how the calculation changes; rounding appears only in the displayed answer unless otherwise stated in the method.
Using 120 g per US cup, 100 g is about 0.833 cup.
No. That is approximately the mass of one cup of water, not dry ingredients.
No. Values refer to US customary cups.
Brand, measuring method and recipe assumptions may differ; follow the recipe’s own weight.
