Estimate US teaspoons from grams using an ingredient-specific grams-per-teaspoon measurement.
A teaspoon does not always weigh 5 grams. Calculations and controls run in this browser tab.
A teaspoon is a volume measure, not a fixed gram weight. The rule is teaspoons = grams ÷ grams per teaspoon. If a particular ingredient weighs 5 g in a level teaspoon, 10 g is about 2 teaspoons. With a factor of 2.5 g per teaspoon, the same 10 g would instead be 4 teaspoons. The adjustable factor prevents a misleading universal answer.
USDA gives one US teaspoon as about 4.93 mL and one tablespoon as three teaspoons. Those units specify volume; they do not say how much flour, salt, honey or another ingredient weighs. Grain size, moisture, packing and whether the spoon is level can materially change a dry-food measurement. For medicines, supplements or infant food, follow the product directions and use calibrated devices.
This page does not infer an ingredient from its name or assign hidden densities. When converting a recipe, look for its own tested gram equivalent; otherwise weigh one level teaspoon several times and use an average. The result is proportional to the factor you enter, so a 10% error in grams per teaspoon creates a similar error in the spoon estimate.
Example: 10 g ÷ 5 g per teaspoon = 2 US teaspoons for the illustrative ingredient.
Use the sample inputs above to reproduce the example. Results display practical rounded values; real measurements and agreements can involve more uncertainty than the arithmetic.
It varies by ingredient; 5 g is only a water-like illustration.
Divide grams by the measured grams in one teaspoon of that ingredient.
The US customary teaspoon is approximately 4.93 mL in the USDA conversion guide.
Dry ingredients vary with packing and measuring technique.
