Converters
Convert a signed whole-number fraction to an exact terminating or marked repeating decimal where possible.
The denominator cannot be zero. Calculations run locally in your browser.
A fraction a/b means a divided by b, provided b is not zero. Long division yields a whole-number part and then decimal digits from repeated remainders. If a remainder becomes zero, the decimal terminates; if a remainder repeats, the same later digits repeat. This tool tracks remainders rather than merely rounding a floating-point quotient.
For 3/8, division gives 0.375 and ends. For 1/3, the remainder cycles and the output is 0.(3), meaning 0.333... . For 1/6, it shows 0.1(6), meaning 0.1666... . Negative signs are carried to the result. A decimal can end only when the reduced denominator’s prime factors are 2 and/or 5 in base ten.
Only whole-number numerators and denominators are accepted, up to 100 digits each. This is a text-based arithmetic converter, not a parser for mixed numbers such as “1 1/2” or complex fractions. Some rational numbers have long repeating cycles; after 40 digits the tool cuts the expansion and marks it with an ellipsis rather than pretending the truncated digits are exact. Never use a truncated display as an exact value in a later calculation.
Example: 1/3 = 0.(3); 3/8 = 0.375.
Use the sample inputs above to reproduce this result. The numeric display is rounded for reading; measurements and real-world conditions can carry more uncertainty than the arithmetic.
Divide numerator by denominator using long division.
The digit 3 repeats forever: 0.333... .
After reduction, denominators containing only factors 2 and 5 terminate in base ten.
Not directly. Convert it to an improper fraction first.
