Estimate pounds from US cups for a selected ingredient, with the mass-per-cup assumption shown alongside the answer.
A pound of flour and a pound of sugar occupy different volumes. Calculations run locally in your browser.
There is no single number of cups in a pound: a cup is volume and a pound is mass. This calculator first multiplies cups by the selected ingredient’s reference grams per US cup, then divides grams by 453.59237 g per avoirdupois pound. The pound conversion comes from NIST; the ingredient reference values come from King Arthur Baking. These two sources cover different steps of the calculation.
For two cups of all-purpose flour at 120 g per cup, the estimated mass is 240 g, or about 0.529 lb. One pound of this flour would be about 453.59237 ÷ 120 = 3.78 US cups. By contrast, one pound of granulated sugar at 198 g per cup would be about 2.29 cups. This is why an answer to “how many cups in a pound?” must name the ingredient and measuring method.
Do not use the result for legal trade, nutrition labeling or high-precision baking. Packed brown sugar has a different chart weight than loose white sugar; flour weight changes with scooping and aeration. If a recipe says “one pound butter,” weigh it or use the packaging’s marked weight rather than assuming all cups share the same density. The output is rounded for readability, not precision.
Example: 2 cups flour × 120 g/cup = 240 g; 240 ÷ 453.59237 = approximately 0.529 lb.
Use the sample inputs above to reproduce this result. Enter your own values to see how the calculation changes; rounding appears only in the displayed answer unless otherwise stated in the method.
Using 120 g per US cup, approximately 3.78 cups; actual scoop weights vary.
Using 198 g per US cup, approximately 2.29 cups.
Only the listed ingredients have reference weights; other ingredients need their own measured mass per cup.
No. Pounds measure mass, cups measure volume, so ingredient density is required.
