ASCII is a 7-bit code with decimal values 0–127. This table does not list Unicode or so-called extended ASCII code pages.
ASCII assigns integer values 0–127 to a compact set of control functions and printable symbols. The binary column shows exactly seven bits because the code space is seven bits wide; the hex column uses two digits for convenient byte-oriented reading. Decimal 65, hex 41, and binary 1000001 all identify capital A. Leading zeroes in a byte representation would make that last pattern 01000001.
Codes 0–31 and 127 are controls rather than visible letters. The table names them with conventional abbreviations such as NUL, HT, LF, CR, ESC, and DEL. LF (10) commonly separates lines in Unix-style text; CR (13) historically returned a print head and is paired with LF in CRLF line endings. Their effect depends on the surrounding format and software.
The printable range is 32–126 inclusive. Decimal 32 is the space character, shown as SPACE so an otherwise blank table cell is not mistaken for missing data. Decimal 48 is digit 0, 65 is capital A, and 97 is lowercase a. These are code values, not the numeric values represented by digit glyphs; the character 0 is not the NUL control.
ASCII alone does not define accented letters, non-Latin scripts, or emoji. The phrase extended ASCII is ambiguous because many incompatible eight-bit code pages reused values 128–255. UTF-8 keeps ASCII bytes 0–127 compatible but uses multibyte sequences for other Unicode characters. For that reason the table stops at 127 rather than guessing a code page.
| Example | Result | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| LF | 10 decimal / 0A hex / 0001010 binary | A control code commonly used as a line feed. |
| SPACE | 32 decimal / 20 hex / 0100000 binary | Printable but intentionally rendered with a visible label here. |
| A | 65 decimal / 41 hex / 1000001 binary | A seven-bit ASCII code; as a byte it has a leading zero. |
| DEL | 127 decimal / 7F hex / 1111111 binary | The final standard ASCII value is a control code. |
Identify whether a line ending contains LF, CR, or both and compare their numeric codes.
Compare the decimal, hex, and seven-bit forms of the same printable symbol.
Look up conventional control abbreviations while reading a specification.
This is a reference for US-ASCII only. It is not a Unicode character browser or a decoder for unknown eight-bit files.
There are 128 code values, 0 through 127. Ninety-five are printable, including space; thirty-three are control codes.
Standard ASCII defines seven-bit values. It is often stored in eight-bit bytes with the high bit zero, but values 128–255 are outside ASCII.
The label makes code 32 visible. The actual character is a blank space.
NUL is control code 0. The printable digit 0 has decimal code 48 and hexadecimal code 30.
